About Us
Nefaria opened on 20th October 2003. It is owned by Nadia, who has been into the gothic subculture since she was 17. She wanted to set up her own business for many
reasons. The first reason being that she was unable to work for someone else due to health problems. The second is that she wanted to have her independence in the workplace. The third,
and most important, is that she wanted to sell the things which you simply cannot get in the average gothic store. She was tired of the same old clothes being offered, at the same old inflated prices, in the same old sizes, and with the same old accessories to go with them.
It was hard for her to track down unique and interesting gothic items to give as gifts, or to furnish her house with, so she decided to open a shop that would bring all these things together, that would act as a gothic emporium, selling everything that anyone could ever want.
The bank turned her down so she went to Prince’s Trust. They offered her a Grant as well as a Loan, and the she was told that Barclays Bank would match the full amount offered by Prince’s Trust. To start with Barclays did not play ball,
but after a number of telephone conversations and face to face meetings they offered her a loan for the same amount as the Prince’s Trust.
Even better, Business Link offered help and advice for her to set up a website as well as a physical shop. This meant that she could reach more people and offer a wider range of sizes, colours and unique items without discrimination
to anybody. The website would help people from different parts of the country access gothic clothing, jewellery and gifts. People can order via the website or visit the shop, they can even suggest items that they feel may be of interest to
others.
Nefaria comes from the word ‘Nefarious’ which means ‘Wickedly Extreme’. |
